The 33-year-old is believed to be keen on leaving the Saudi Pro League side after just six months in the Middle East.
Henderson has been offered to the likes of Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus, while his name has been circulated to virtually every Premier League club.
Al-Ettifaq have made it clear Henderson is not for sale, and a loan deal would be difficult for most clubs due to his high £350,000-per-week wages.
Henderson, as of yet, has not handed in a transfer request, with Steven Gerrard still keen to build his team around the former Liverpool skipper.
Speaking on White and Jordan, Souness touched on what he believes is the factor contributing to Henderson wanting to leave the Middle East.
“He [Henderson] would have known about the climate in Saudi Arabia, and known he was going to a much inferior league given the Premier League is best one out there,” Souness told White and Jordan.
“I would imagine if they were top of the league and he was being well received as player they thought they were getting, we would not be talking about this.
“I think it is a combination of him having a miserable time, and because the club has underachieved.”
Souness continued: “Could I deal with the heat? Yes. Could I deal with losing every week? Yes.
“The one thing I could not take, was if my wife was not there, I would be like ‘I just can’t do this’.
“I am second guessing, but if she is still living in Cheshire somewhere, and that is what is driving it, that is a whole different argument.
“The other two I could deal with, I am not sure I could deal with my wife telling me I can’t live here.”
Souness also believes that the former Liverpool captain, who played 492 times for the Merseyside club, has plenty to offer Premier League teams.
He continued: “There is a lot to like about Henderson, great athlete, looks to be a great type.
“I was asked the question about James Milner going to Brighton, and I said ‘James Milner going to Brighton will make them a better football club’.
“He will make the starting XI stronger, and I think Jordan comes into that category.
“Having played abroad and worked abroad, Jordan Henderson does not have a trick, he is a workaholic, a very steady Eddie, up and down the pitch
“They make other players embarrassed because of the work they put in.”
Al-Ettifaq find themselves eighth in the Saudi Pro League, a whopping 28 points adrift of leaders Al-Hilal.
The club are also winless since October, with question marks over boss Gerrard.
