The reigning Super Bowl champions kick off their defence of the Vince Lombardi Trophy against the Detroit Lion.
The Chiefs have already managed to avoid one injury absentee in Kadarius Toney, who’s set to be declared fit for the opener.
But now they’ve been handed a fresh blow after superstar Kelce sustained a problem during practice this week.
Travis Kelce: Injury latest
Kelce is a major doubt for the Chiefs’ opener after the two-time Super Bowl-winning TE hyperextended his knee in Tuesday’s practice.
When asked how the game plan might change, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said: “The next guy steps in and we roll. That’s what you do if [he doesn’t play].”
ESPN have reported that Kelce’s ACL is intact but the Chiefs will test it again Wednesday to determine his availability.
A hyperextended knee typically takes at least two weeks to recover from which would rule him out of gameweek one.
