It was a rollercoaster night for Ronaldo on Monday against Slovenia.
After missing a crucial penalty in extra time, he was in floods of tears and would have been thinking that he had let his country down.
However, following some support from his teammates to lift him again, the legend got away with it and stepped up first in the shootout around 20 minutes later.
Ronaldo was never going to miss again and he tucked his spot-kick into the back of the net to set Portugal up for a huge win in the end.
After the game, he explained why he was crying and said: “Even the strongest people have their days, I was down and I was sad because the team needed me.
“Initial sadness and joy at the end, that’s what football brings, inexplicable moments, from the eighth minute to the 80th, that’s what happens.
“I could have given the national team the advantage, but I didn’t manage it, Oblak saved, I didn’t miss once during the year, and when I needed it most Oblak saved.
“It’s a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, but the most important thing is progressing, the team deserved it.”
Portugal have no new injuries to deal with heading into the quarter-finals.
However, after a disappointing Euros so far, Rafael Leao could lose his place to Liverpool’s Diogo Jota.
Fulham’s Joao Palhinha was superb against Slovenia and is expected to start again at the base of the midfield.
As for France, they will be without Adrien Rabiot who is suspended after receiving his second yellow card of the tournament on Monday.
That is likely to lead to Antoine Griezmann return to his midfield position while Ousmane Dembele should come back in out wide.
This quarter-final could be Ronaldo’s last ever game at the Euros after he confirmed this will be his last appearance in this tournament.
“Without a doubt, it’s the last Euro [for me], of course it is,” he said.
“But I’m not emotional about that. I’m moved by everything that football entails, by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm I see in the fans, having my family here, people’s passion.
“It’s not about leaving the world of football. What else is there for me to do or win?”
