The Three Lions had their ticket booked for the next round without kicking a ball after the end of Group B’s final fixtures on Monday.
England then drew 0-0 with Slovenia in their final Group C game on Tuesday in another limp display, but topped the pool after Denmark failed to win.
Their first place finish meant they avoided a last-16 game against Germany and will instead face the Netherlands or whichever team finishes third in Group E at 5pm BST on Sunday, in Gelsenkirchen.
As of Wednesday morning, Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine are all locked on three points each in Group E so it could yet end up being any one of those four.
But it’s actually the results in Group F on Wednesday which will decide who the Three Lions face next. Confusing? Yes, knows and Jamie O’Hara’s brain is hurting having been up all night trying to remember everything for Sports Bar at 10pm.
Keep up now – Southgate’s men will face the Dutch, who finished third in Group D, unless the Czech Republic beat Turkey or Georgia beat Portugal in Group F.
The reason is because Turkey, Czech Republic and Georgia can all finish third in Group F. If any of them do end up there and have three points or more to their name, they would take Hungary’s place in the third-placed standings.
- Netherlands (most likely)
- Belgium
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Ukraine
Should England advance to the quarter-finals, Switzerland or Euro 2020 winners Italy await.
The quarter-final would take place on Saturday, 6 July, in Dusseldorf at 8pm BST.
With France finishing second in their group, England would avoid them in the semi-finals if they win through.
Group D winners Austria are on England’s side of the draw and potential last four opponents.
They stunned both France and Netherlands by topping their group with a 3-2 win over the Dutch in the final round of games, while France drew with Poland.
The winner of Group E, runner-up of Group F and one of Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and the Netherlands are other potential opponents
