The Hungarian striker was involved in a horrific collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn during the side’s Euro 2024 group meeting in Stuttgart.
Varga was given medical treatment on the pitch before being transported to hospital.
It has since been confirmed that the 26-year-old is in a stable condition and that he required surgery for facial fractures.
But UEFA have come under fire for the immediate response from Hungary captain Dominic Szoboszlai, as well as many fans who have expressed criticism on social media.
The Liverpool midfielder slammed UEFA as he questioned why it took so long for medics to start tending to Varga.
Szoboszlai and other Hungarian players were seen putting their teammate Varga, who had been knocked unconscious, into the recovery position.
The Hungary captain was seen also seen trying to hasten the medics and the stretcher to his teammate’s side after the incident.
UEFA have defended their response by saying that they followed all protocols and that treatment was not slow, as some have claimed.
Their statement read: “With regards to the medical intervention following the head injury suffered by Barnabas Varga of Hungary, we would like to clarify that the intervention of the team doctor happened within 15 seconds of the incident, followed immediately by the second stadium doctor, to conduct a first assessment of the injury and provide appropriate treatment, as per customary medical procedures.
“The qualified pitchside emergency team were waiting pitchside, according to their protocol, and arrived with the stretcher as soon as their intervention was requested by the medics to evacuate the player for his immediate transfer to hospital.
“The coordination between all the medical staff on site was professional and everything was done in accordance with the applicable medical procedures.
“There was no delay in the treatment of and assistance to the player.”
